C’est l’été, il fait chaud, le soleil est de sortie, vous êtes à la plage, un petit cocktail à la main… le cadre est idyllique mais il ne vous manque qu’une seule chose : de la musique. Pour ça, on a le groupe qu’il vous faut ! Tout droit venus d’Amérique, le trio Slim And The Beast est prêt à vous en mettre plein les yeux ! Avec leur pop réjouissante et leurs sourires contagieux, les trois garçons dans le vent ont accepté de répondre à nos questions. Rencontre.

Salut les gars ! Comment allez-vous aujourd’hui ?
Samuel : Super bien !
Aurélien : Heureux à Paris parce que c’est l’été.
Aaron : Nous allons jouer au basket après, le soleil est là… on va très bien !
Pouvez-vous vous présenter pour ceux qui ne vous connaissent pas ?
Aaron : Je m’appelle Aaron Lopez Barrantes, je joue de la guitare et je chante dans le groupe. Je suis né en France et j’ai grandi aux Etats-Unis.
Aurélien : Je suis né à NYC et j’ai grandi avec beaucoup de musique autour de moi tout le temps, différents styles comme la musique urbaine, le hip-hop et le jazz. J’ai déménagé en France quand j’avais quinze ans, je vivais essentiellement entre l’Europe et les Etats-Unis. Et maintenant je suis de retour à Paris, j’écoute toujours du jazz, du hip-hop et du jazz… Et je suis maintenant dans le groupe !
Samuel : Je suis le frère jumeau d’Aaron. Il est né quatre minutes avant moi. J’ai déménagé à Paris en 2008 pour étudier à la Sorbonne puis je suis tombé amoureux de la ville et des filles. Et maintenant je suis toujours là !
Comment vous êtes-vous rencontrés et comment avez-vous créé le groupe ?
Samuel : On a un ballon de basket avec nous parce que nous jouons beaucoup au basket à Saint-Paul au Marais. En 2015, j’ai rencontré Aurélien sur le terrain de basket et nous nous sommes liés parce que nous étions tous les deux américains et que nous avions des styles de jeu différents. Puis nous avons tous les deux commencé à parler de musique, et un jour on a jammé après un match. C’est parti de là, je jouais de l’harmonica et lui de la guitare. On chantait beaucoup de chansons des Beatles, du blues et du folk. Aaron savait que j’avais commencé quelque chose avec Aurélien alors il nous a rejoint en 2016 et c’était automatique que nous allions être un trio.
Aurélien : Nous nous sommes rencontrés d’abord en duo, puis Aaron est rentré en Amérique, nous avons donc existé en trio, mais à distance. Au cours des trois / quatre dernières années, nous avons existé en tant que groupe, mais c’est vraiment au cours de cette année qu’on a été pleinement ensemble.
Pourquoi avez-vous appelé le groupe Slim And The Beast ?
Samuel : Une des raisons pour lesquelles je suis venu à Paris était d’écrire des livres parce que je suis romancier. J’ai publié en 2015 un livre intitulé Slim And The Beast qui parle de la poursuite de la passion et de la définition de ce que nous voulons faire dans la vie. C’était approprié une fois que nous nous sommes rencontrés, Aaron l’a suggéré comme nom pour le groupe.
Aurélien : Il n’y a donc ni maigre, ni bête !
Aaron : Parfois on m’appelle le mince parce que je suis le maigre du groupe !
Samuel : Eh bien, tout le monde peut être le maigre et la bête en même temps.
Aurélien : L’histoire du livre est en quelque sorte similaire à ce que nous ressentons les uns envers les autres.
Aurélien, qu’est-ce que ça fait d’être dans un groupe avec des frères jumeaux ?
Aurélien : C’est très facile. D’après ma compréhension de la culture des jumeaux, ils s’entendent généralement très bien. Du moins, ces deux-là, donc il est très facile de communiquer avec eux ! Quand l’un pense quelque chose, l’autre est généralement d’accord, la plupart du temps ! Quand ça arrive, c’est plus facile pour moi de m’intégrer. On n’a pas l’impression d’être trois, on est très individuel mais on se sent aussi très connecté. Le fait qu’ils soient déjà connectés me permet de m’intégrer plus facilement. J’ai aussi l’impression qu’il y a beaucoup de fraternité entre eux deux. Je me sens comme un frère.
Samuel : C’est un frère ! C’est super naturel, on a l’impression d’être au bon endroit, là où on a besoin d’être en tant que frères et en tant que groupe. Aurélien est devenu un frère pour nous. C’est ce qui est cool avec le nom Slim And The Beast, c’est une idée et un sentiment.
Aurélien : Ce sont des jumeaux + 1 mais c’est aussi nous trois, trois frères et trois individus. Il n’y a donc pas de réel problème à être entouré de jumeaux, c’est plutôt une bénédiction.
Sur le plan musical, quelles sont vos plus grandes influences ?
Samuel : Nous avons tous un si grand mélange d’influences de part la façon dont nous avons été élevés. Je pense que collectivement, c’est les Beatles. Beaucoup de rock des années 70 comme The Bee Gees, James Taylor, Neil Young… On aime aussi Tame Impala et Mac DeMarco.
Aurélien : Nous avons tous des influences des années 60 et 70 mais il ça peut aller de la musique urbaine à la musique soul. Il y a beaucoup de musique indie d’aujourd’hui comme Metronomy ou Young Gun Silver Fox mais c’est un mélange de folk rock, pop, urbain, et électronique.
Parlons de votre nouvel EP qui sortira plus tard cette année.
Aurélien : Oui, ça va être septembre ou octobre, ça reste à définir mais disons à l’automne 2019. Il y aura 6 chansons : 3 singles et 3 nouvelles chansons. Il s’agira d’une sortie indépendante entièrement produite par nous-mêmes. Chaque chanson a un producer différent, parfois 2 chansons ont le même. Mais nous avons décidé de travailler avec différentes personnes qui ont une compréhension du son que nous recherchons. Cela apporte aussi de l’originalité, des idées différentes, des couleurs différentes. Ils sont tous français et c’est super avec le mix américain.
On peut donc s’attendre à un EP varié avec beaucoup de styles musicaux !
Aurélien : Le thème commun à toutes les chansons est nos trois voix et nos guitares acoustiques. Il y aura toujours une similitude parce que c’est comme ça qu’on écrit les chansons : e acoustique et vocalement. Les différences dans chaque chanson viendront des différents producers. Parfois aussi avec la nature de la chanson elle-même, mais il y a à l’origine un noyau vintage, mais c’est plus moderne grâce à l’implication des producers. Disons que c’est entre folk, rock, pop et indie rock.
Comment avez-vous choisi les différents producers ?
Aurélien : En gros, on nous a présenté des amis que je connais depuis longtemps dans l’industrie de la musique, ils font partie de groupes bien connus comme Caravan Palace. L’un des membres est un peu mon mentor musical. Alors, quand je lui ai parlé de ce projet, il voulait que je rencontre différents producers, il travaillait déjà ou collaborait avec eux. Et c’est avec ces différents mecs que nous travaillons actuellement. Tous ceux qui ont écouté le projet l’ont adoré, donc nous sommes très chanceux parce que tout le monde aime le style folk rock américain. Mais en France, c’est probablement moins populaire, du moins avec un son américain authentique. Je pense que ces producers français que j’ai rencontrés par le biais de groupes plus importants étaient heureux de découvrir notre groupe, et de nous donner un vrai soutien. Nous les avons choisis, mais ils nous ont aussi choisis !
Comment écrivez-vous vos chansons ?
Aaron : J’ai vécu en Nouvelle-Orléans huit ans et j’ai écrit un album tout seul. J’ai toujours aimé écrire des chansons, alors quand nous nous sommes réunis en tant que groupe, il y avait déjà beaucoup de chansons déjà écrites. Il y avait aussi des chansons qu’Aurélien et Samuel avaient écrites tous les deux. Nous avons mis les chansons sur la table et nous les avons toutes travaillées tous les trois. Nous y contribuons tous à notre manière, mais nous en discutons toujours ensemble.
Samuel : C’est cool parce que « Lisbon » est la première chanson que nous avons écrite ensemble dans la même pièce, des accords aux paroles. C’est très collaboratif et nous sommes maintenant un vrai groupe, il n’y a pas un frontman, c’est un trio.
Aurélien : Nous pensons que notre musique est toujours très équilibrée. La quantité d’harmonies, la quantité de travail à la guitare….Il n’y a jamais un leader. Même s’il y a un moment avec un chanteur principal, la chanson suivante aura Samuel chantant à la place d’Aaron par exemple.
Avez-vous déjà pensé à chanter en français un jour ?
Samuel : On nous le demande beaucoup ! Mais non, pas vraiment.
Aaron : On y a réfléchi et on a décidé que ce n’était pas vraiment nous.
Samuel : Ce n’est pas très naturel pour nous en fait. Nous nous définissons vraiment comme un groupe américain. Ce serait beau, surtout une reprise de Gainsbourg ou de Brel. Mais pour l’instant, on s’en tient à chanter en anglais.
Aurélien : Je pense que les gens qui chantent en français ont un amour et une passion réels et comprennent les mots français au niveau des paroles. Dans le style de musique que nous faisons, qui est très authentique, on se sent plus à l’aise de s’en tenir à l’authenticité de la langue anglaise. Et deuxièmement, je pense que nous n’essayons pas d’être un groupe français. On essaye d’être un groupe américain qui est aujourd’hui en France, mais qui pourrait vivre demain aux Etats-Unis, ou en Allemagne, donc nous ne voulons pas nous cataloguer.
Y a-t-il un message que vous voulez faire passer dans votre musique ?
Aurélien : Il y a clairement des messages dans notre musique.
Samuel : L’idée de cultiver la joie et de créer un espace où les gens peuvent s’identifier dans les chansons. Beaucoup de nos chansons sont plutôt positives. Il y a un aspect d’espoir. Nous sommes des gars faciles et nous aimons la vie, nous aimons voyager. On aime vivre avec de bonnes vibes. Pour moi, l’une des choses que nous aimons donner aux gens, c’est de profiter de la vie.
Aurélien : C’est vraiment une clé et je pense que certaines personnes ont compris ce message de profiter. Il est important pour nous de rester fidèles à ce message auquel nous nous sentons liés. Vivre le moment présent, profiter des choses et ne pas être affecté par ce qui se passe aujourd’hui. En général, nous ne voyons pas les choses de façon négative. Notre musique est pleine de soleil, d’amour et de joie.
Allez-vous sortir une autre chanson avant la sortie de l’EP ?
Aurélien : Oui, une qui s’appelle « Tiger Eyes », qui ressemble plus à une chanson rock classique. Elle sortira à la fin du mois d’août. « Close To You » était le premier single qui était plus folk, « Lisbon » est plus pop et « Tiger Eyes » va être rock. Le but de ces singles est de donner les trois couleurs de notre son pour nous présenter.
Quand peut-on s’attendre à un vrai album maintenant ?
Aurélien : Comme l’EP sortira en octobre, on va faire attendre les gens d’octobre à la fin de l’année. Début 2020, c’est là que vous pouvez vous attendre à un album complet.
Quels sont les prochains projets à venir, à côté de votre album ?
Samuel : On vient de booker notre premier festival pour l’année prochaine aux Etats-Unis, en Caroline du Nord. Nous allons nous construire autour de cela et faire une tournée sur la côte est des USA. Bien sûr, quand l’album sortira début 2020, nous espérons jouer assez souvent à Paris et diffuser notre musique en France, puis en Angleterre. Dans les 6 prochains mois, on va jouer notre musique en France et à Paris. La semaine prochaine, on jouera à Barcelone. On va rester en Europe jusqu’à la sortie de l’album. Ensuite on pourrait peut-être jouer au Staple Center haha !
Aurélien : Oui, notre plan principal est de finaliser le son sur lequel nous travaillons, donc il va y avoir beaucoup de temps en studio. Il n’y a pas de tournée officielle pour l’instant car nous sommes encore en recherche d’agence pour jouer plus sérieusement. Mais jusqu’à ce moment, l’accent sera mis principalement sur la musique et sa promotion par le biais d’artwork, de vidéos, de performances locales…
Et pour finir, notre site s’appelle Singing Belle. Alors quelle est la chanson que vous ne pouvez pas vous arrêter de chanter en ce moment ?
Aaron : Cette chanson de Mac DeMarco intitulée « Preoccupied » de son nouvel album que j’écoute beaucoup. C’est une guitare mélancolique et c’est juste une mélodie très forte. C’est très chill. J’adore aussi Anderson Paak en ce moment, surtout sa nouvelle chanson « Make It Better ».
Samuel : Pour moi, c’est « New Day Tonight » de Michael Rault, c’est coincé dans ma tête !
Aurélien : C’est aussi « Do you want to make it better » d’Anderson Paak. C’est une chanson avec Smokey Robinson. Ces 3 artistes : Mac DeMarco, Anderson Paak et Michael Rault sont de grandes influences pour nous. Mais je dois dire que je chante souvent mes propres mélodies !
Aaron : Je pense que quand tu finis par chanter tes propres chansons, c’est un sentiment génial parce qu’on a beaucoup travaillé dessus.

Aaron : We’re gonna play some basketball after all, the sun is out… we’re very good!
Can you introduce yourself for people who might not know who you are?
Aaron : My name is Aaron Lopez Barrantes, I play guitar and I sing in the band. I was born in France and raised in the US.
Aurélien : I was born in NYC and I grew up with a lot of music around me all the time, different styles like urban music, hip-hop and jazz. I moved to France when I was fifteen, I basically lived between Europe and the US. And now I’m in Paris again, still listening to jazz, hip-hop and jazz… And I’m now in the band!
Samuel : I’m Aaron’s twin brother. He’s four minutes older than me. I moved to Paris in 2008 to study at La Sorbonne and then I fell in love with the city and the women. And now I’m still here!
How did you three meet and create the band?
Samuel : We have a basketball here ‘cause we play a lot of basketball at Saint-Paul in Le Marais. In 2015 I met Aurélien at the basketball court and we kind of connected because we were both American and we had different styles playing. Then we both started talking about music and one day we had a jam after a basketball game. It sparked from there, I was playing harmonica and he was playing guitar. We were singing a lot of Beatles songs, blues and folk. Aaron knew I was started something with Aurélien so he came in 2016 and it was automatic that we were gonna be a trio.
Aurélien : We met first as a duo, then Aaron came and went back to America so we existed as a trio but long distance. In the last 3-4 years we’ve existed but in the last year we’ve really been fully together.
Why did you call the band Slim And The Beast?
Samuel : One of the reasons I moved to Paris was to write books ‘cause I’m a novelist. I published a book in 2015 called Slim And The Beast which is about the pursuit of passion and defining what we wanna do in life. It was fitting once we met, Aaron suggested it as the name for the band.
Aurélien : So there’s no slim and no beast!
Aaron : Sometimes they call me the slim ‘cause I’m the skinny one!
Samuel : Well can all be the slim and the beast at the same time.
Aurélien : The story of the book is somehow similar to how we feel about each other.
Aurélien, how does it feel to be in a band with twin brothers?
Aurélien : It makes it very easy. As far as my understanding of twin culture is, they generally get along very well. At least these two do, so it makes it very easy to communicate with them! When one thinks something the other one is generally in agreement, most of the time! When it happens it makes it easy for me to fit in. It doesn’t feel like three, we’re very individual but we also feel very connected. The fact that they already connected allows me to connect more easily. I also feel there’s so much fraternity and brotherhood between them two. It makes me feel like a brother.
Samuel : He is a brother! It feels super natural, we feel like we’re at the right place, where we need to be as brothers and as a band. Aurélien has become a brother for us. That’s what’s cool with the name Slim And The Beast, it’s an idea and a feeling.
Aurélien : It’s twins + 1 but it’s also just three, three brothers and three individuals. So there’s no real issues to be around twins, it’s actually a blessing.
Musically speaking, what are your biggest influences?
Samuel : We all have such a great mix of influences from the way we were raised. I think collectively it’s The Beatles. A lot of seventies rock like The Bee Gees, James Taylor, Neil Young… We also like Tame Impala and Mac DeMarco.
Aurélien : We all have influences from the sixties and seventies but it can go to urban music to soul music. A lot of indie music from today as well like Metronomy or Young Gun Silver Fox. There’s always a mix of folk rock, pop, urban, electronics and a lot of indie music.
Let’s talk about your new EP coming out later this year.
Aurélien : Yeah it’s gonna be September or October, it’s still to be defined but let’s say the fall of 2019. It’s going to be 6 songs : three singles plus three new songs. That will be an independent release fully produced. Each song has a different producer on it, sometimes 2 songs have the same. But we decided to work with different individuals that have an understanding of the sound we’re looking for. That also brings some originality to it, different ideas, different colors. They’re all French and it’s great with the American mix.
So we can expect a various EP with a lot of music styles!
Aurélien : The common theme between all the songs is our three voices and our acoustic guitars. There will always be a similarity because that’s how we write songs: acoustically and vocally. The differences in each song will come from the different producers. Also sometimes with the nature of the song itself, but there’s originally a vintage core to the style but it’s modern because of the producers’ involvement. So let’s say it’s between folk, rock, pop and indie rock.
How did you choose the different producers?
Aurélien : Basically we were introduced to one or to people that are friends of mine that I’ve known for a long time in the music industry, they’re part of some well known bands like Caravan Palace. One of the members is kind of a mentor to me musically. So when I told him about this project he wanted me to meet different producers he was already working or collaborating with him. And those different producers are the ones that we’re now working with. Everybody on the project who listened to it loved it so we’re very fortunate and lucky because everybody loves the American folk rock style. But in France is probably less popular, at least with an authentic American sound. So I think these French producers that I met through bigger bands were happy to discover our band and give us a real support. We chose them but they also chose us!
How do you write your songs?
Aaron : I’ve been living in New Orleans for eight years and I put on a record on my own. I’ve always loved writing songs so when we came together as a group there was already a lot of songs already written. There was also songs that Aurélien and Samuel wrote together. We brought the songs on the table and we all worked on them together. We contribute to them in our own way but we always discuss them together.
Samuel : Now we’re together it’s cool because «Lisbon» is the first song we wrote together in the same room, from chords to lyrics. It’s very much collaborative and we’re now a real group, there’s not one frontman, it’s a trio.
Aurélien : We feel that in our music in the sense of it’s always very balanced. The amount of harmonies, the amount of guitar work…There’s never one lead person. Even if there is for one moment it balances out with another lead vocalist or the next song will have Samuel singing instead of Aaron.
Have you ever thought about singing in French sometime?
Samuel : We’re asked that a lot! But no, not really.
Aaron : We thought about it then decided it’s not really us.
Samuel : It’s not very natural for us. We really do define ourselves as an American band. That would be beautiful, especially doing a cover of Gainsbourg or Brel. But for now we’re sticking singing in English.
Aurélien : I think people who sing in French have a real love and passion and understanding of the French words lyrically. In the style of music we do which is very authentic we feel more comfortable sticking to the authenticity of the English language. And secondly I think we are not trying to be a French band. We’re trying to be an American band that today is in France but tomorrow could be living in the US, or Germany so we don’t want to pigeonhole ourselves.
Is there a message you want to spread in your music?
Aurélien : There’s definitely messages in our music.
Samuel : The idea of cultivating joy and creating a space where people can get into the songs. A lot of our songs are pretty positive. There’s a hopeful aspect. We’re easy going guys and we love life, we love to travel. We like to live in a way vibes are driving with passion. For me one of the things we like to give back to everybody is enjoying life.
Aurélien : That’s really a key and I think some people have picked up on that message of enjoyment. It’s important for us to stay with that message which is one we feel connected to. Just living the moment, enjoying things and no getting affected of what’s going on today. We don’t generally look at things the negative way. Our music is full of sun, love and joy.
Are you gonna be releasing another song before the EP comes out?
Aurélien : Yeah, one called «Tiger Eyes», which is more like a classic rock song. It’s gonna be out at the end of August. «Close To You» was the first single which was more of a folk song, «Lisbon» is more of a pop song and «Tiger Eyes» is gonna be a rock song. The point of these singles is to give the three colors of our sound to present ourselves that way.
When can we expect a LP now?
Aurélien : As the EP is gonna be out around October, from October until the end of the year we’re gonna keep people waiting. Beginning of 2020 is where you can expect a full album.
What are the next projects now, alongside your album?
Samuel : We just booked our first festival for next year in the US, North Carolina. We’re going to build around that and do an East Coast Tour. Of course when the album is out early 2020 our hope is to play quite often in Paris and spread our music in France and then England. In the next 6 months we are gonna be playing our music in France and Paris specifically. Next week we play in Barcelona. We’re gonna stay in Europe until the albums comes out. Then we could maybe play the Staple Center haha!
Aurélien : Yeah our main plan is to finalize the sound we are working on so there’s gonna be a lot of studio time. There’s no official tour for now because we’re at the stage where we’re looking for a Touring Agency to gig more seriously. But until we find that the focus is going to be mainly the music and promoting it through artwork, videos, local performances…
To finish this interview, our website is called Singing Belle, so what’s the song you can’t stop singing at the moment?
Aaron : This song by Mac DeMarco called «Preoccupied» off his new album that I’ve been listening to a lot. It’s kind of a melancholy guitar and it’s just a really strong guitar melody. It’s very chill. I also love Anderson Paak right now, especially his new song «Make It Better».
